Abstract

Working memory (WM), the ability to simultaneously store and process information, has been a popular topic of research for decades among cognitive psychologists and is now receiving increased interest among linguists and second language acquisition (SLA) researchers who wish to examine its role in language learning. Psychologists have developed several appropriate methods of measuring and discussing WM among first language (L1) speakers, and SLA researchers have been quick to apply these methods to the study of WM among second language (L2) learners. However, further examination of the nature and context of these methods suggests that they may be inappropriate for research with L2 participants.
