Abstract

The Tutte polynomial is a valuative invariant on matroid basis polytopes. We give an introduction to such invariants, focusing on the g-invariant, which is the universal valuative invariant, and its relation to the Tutte polynomial. • Valuative functions on matroid base polytopes. • The g-invariant and its specialization to the Tutte polynomial.
