Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce high quality children’s and young adult literature which serve to create a sense of belonging for LGBTQ+ students in P-5 classrooms. We provide a rationale for the importance of the inclusion of LGBTQ+ literature and a historical overview of LGBTQ+ legislation. Next, we offer a discussion of the role of censorship and its impact on the availability of children’s literature. We present a topical selection of books for teachers to use during their read-alouds and to place in their classroom library in order to provide an inclusive environment for all. Finally, we provide a number of additional resources for further exploration, reflection questions, and teaching tips for including LGBTQ+ books within the classroom space.
