Abstract

This conceptual chapter unravels the developing phenomenon of the teacher-to-teacher online marketplace of ideas (TOMI), a collection of online sites and social media platforms wherein teachers distribute and obtain, for free or at a cost, teaching-related ideas and materials. We discuss three prominent TOMI platforms: Teachers Pay Teachers, Pinterest, and Instagram. Next, we describe the ecological nature of the TOMI, identifying affordances and challenges that the proliferation of an interconnected web of social media platforms provides to teachers. Specifically, we consider the TOMI's neoliberal attributes and its ability to simultaneously push against and affirm neoliberal forces in education. We close with ways educational stakeholders might move forward when using the TOMI, particularly in terms of avoiding risks posed by the TOMI's expansive ecosystem.
