TECHNOLOGY-ENHANCED DATA COLLECTION METHODS IN L2 PRAGMATICS RESEARCH

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Pragmatics is a subfield of linguistics that studies people’s language use and the context in which it is used. The connection between language use and context can be best learned in technology-enhanced environments that provide an array of contextualized, meaningful communicative practices. Some of the defining characteristics of technology-enhanced learning-availability of rich multimodal input, opportunities for interaction with real-life consequences, and self-directed, experiential learning-can directly contribute to pragmatics learning. This chapter surveys recent technological advancements in research investigating L2 learners’ learning and development of pragmatic competence. Specifically, the chapter presents a survey of technology-enhanced environments and tools used to collect L2 pragmatics data, along with empirical findings and implications from existing studies. The chapter concludes with future directions for technology-enhanced pragmatics research.
