Abstract

Images painted and engraved on stone surfaces sometimes include images of humans and animals with sexual features and engaged in sexual activities. Rock art is a potentially informative line of archaeological evidence for understanding past human sexuality and sexual dimensions of landscape, cosmology, and worldview. This entry reviews sexual imagery in world rock art, emphasizing the importance of archaeological context and landscape setting. Ethnographic evidence helps us interpret rock art imagery and link sexual imagery to hunting, warfare, agriculture, and rites of passage.
