Abstract

Onemajor approach to discourse analysis focuses on the study of language use, describing the ways in which lexical and grammatical features are used in texts (see Schiffrin et al., 2001: 1; Biber et al., 2007: 1-4). Different kinds of texts have different linguistic characteristics, representing systematic patterns of variation that can be investigated under the rubric of register: text varieties of a language associated with particular situations of use.
