Abstract
Controls such as climate, base level, sand supply, and tectonics, which acted to produce the geometry and internal stratification of eolian sand bodies, can be identified and in some cases quantified. Relates the characteristics of an ancient eolian complex and associated marine shoreline deposits to these controls. The section studied includes the upper third of the Schnebly Hill Formation and base of the overlying Coconino Sandstone. The sequence displays a strongly cyclic character with repetition of distinctive stratification and bedding types. The vertical cyclic nature is accompanied by a major lateral facies change from NW to SE. The sequence formed in dominantly eolian depositional systems in the Sedona area and predominantly shallow marine and sabkha systems to the SE where abundant sandy mudstone, limestone, dolomite, and gypsum are present.-from Authors
