Abstract
More than 300 Native American nations are developing environmental protection capabilities. Analyses performed by Northern Arizona University and others reveal a significant need for Tribal-oriented environmental professionals to develop and carry-out environmental protection programs. The Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals at Northern Arizona University with significant support from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed and delivered training programs to meet specific tribal needs. One such four-course curriculum prepares tribal professionals for air quality management. Curriculum content and pedagogical techniques are designed for this multicultural population. Culturally appropriate training programs are essential to successful development of many emerging environmental protection programs.
