Abstract

This chapter focuses on issues of equity of access, participation, and performance assessment of adult learners in the online classroom. Areas of focus include enrollment, discussion participation, collaborative peer activities, evaluation of assignments, and meeting the needs of students with disabilities. Specific current inequities in the traditional classroom are noted in each of these areas. The chapter highlights how the online classroom equalizes access and learning opportunities for adult learners whose needs may not be fully met in traditional face-to-face learning settings. It also identifies strategies for online instructors to use in maximizing learning opportunities for all students.
