Abstract

All scientific knowledge must be based on observation. This is the basis of scientific method, but there is some ambiguity in how close a link is required between observation and theory. The method cannot be simply a process of generalizing knowledge from observations, since some, at least tentative, knowledge is prerequisite for making scientific observations.
