Abstract
The techniques of cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to study the electrochemical generation and characterization of isocyanide-functionalized polyaniline thin films. 3-Isocyanoaniline 1, [Ir(3-isocyanoaniline)4]PF6 and [Ir(4-isocyanoaniline)4]PF6, formed yellow-gold, well adherent thin films when electropolymerized on platinum and ITO electrode surfaces and were redox active. Polyaniline and the thin film of 1 exposed to iridium(I) metal cations in chloroform solution incorporated iridium(I) into the films. The thin film of 1 exhibited a highly oriented, fibrous structure with average strand widths of 25A °in diameter as determined by AFM.
