Abstract

The roles of formal education (years of schooling) and nonformal education (mass media exposure and travel) in the acculturative process are examined by employing both qualitative and quantitative data. (1) Social and economic variables, (2) traditional and modern behavioral variables, (3) psychological variables, and (3) environmental variables are analyzed to identify alternative sequences of change which are common and idiosyncratic to differentially developed towns in the western highlands of Guatemala. Although data from eight other towns are included, the analysis focuses on San Juan la Laguna and Panajachel. 1979 American Anthropological Association
