Digitally Empowered Assessment of Interactional Competence in a Second Language: Commentary

Abstract

This commentary underscores the common themes that emerged in the papers in this volume. Based on the themes, three specific areas of future directions are highlighted: (a) going beyond practicality arguments when using digital assessment tools, (b) developing rubric descriptors specific to interactional competence in digital spaces, and (c) promoting intersubjectivity with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered conversation partners in interactional competence assessment tasks.
