Abstract
A cyclone for monitoring inhalable particles was tested to determine the 50% collection particle diameters at various airflow rates. The orientation of the air flow leaving the cyclone used in this study was opposite from that of other cyclonic devices, i.e., through the bottom of the cyclone rather than through the top. The 50% collection efficiencies at three airflow rates were determined. For all three flow rates, the 50% collection particle diameter occurred with a definite demarcation in the calibration curves developed. Certain collection characteristics of the cyclone were revealed and are examined. The collection performance of the cyclone compares well with the existing empirical theory.
