Abstract

Reconstructs paleo-fire history records from the Sierra Nevada of California by quantifying fossil charcoal from thin sections of epoxy-impregnated meadow sediments. Modifies a method published by Clark (1988) for impregnating laminated lake sediments, to compensate for the mixed peat, silt, and sand layers recovered in the meadow cores. Modifications include impregnation of long sections of sediment, which are cut to thin-section dimensions after curing, and use of a vacuum pump to enhance impregnation and transfer chemicals, which is faster and more effective than Clark's method of manual, pipette transfers. -from Authors
